08/11/02 Brian McFall the pride of St. John's and Ulster in All Star Nominations

Brian McFall has ended of an historic year for the club at All-Ireland level by earning a 2002 Vodafone GAA Hurling All Star nomination. Having already put St. John's GAC on the map by turning in a superb display against Tipperary in the All-Ireland Quarter-Final (click here for report) he now holds the only hurling nomination from Ulster and with it the hopes and expectations of his club, county and province.

In order to appreciate the size of his acheivement you need only look at the names he is put alongside: "DJ Carey, Henry Shefflin, Tony Griffin, Eoin Kelly".

All-Ireland and Leinster Champions, Kilkenny, has the highest number with a total of 11 players nominated while 2002 All Ireland hurling finalists, Clare, received 6 nominations.

Waterford received 8 nominations, including the Vodafone GAA Player of the Month for June, Ken McGrath.

The final selection for the 2002 Vodafone Hurling All Stars will be announced on Friday, November 29th at the Vodafone All Star Gala banquet in the Citywest Hotel when the recipients will be presented with their 2002 Vodafone Award. The banquet will be broadcast live on RTE 1 television when the Vodafone All Star Football Players will also receive their awards.

Hilda Carroll, Sponsorship Manager of Vodafone, said: "On behalf of Vodafone, I wish to congratulate all those nominated for All Star awards today. This year's Hurling Championship was very exciting with each of the players nominated showing great skill and providing all hurling fans with great sporting entertainment and demonstrations of skill. We all look forward to seeing how all of the nominees fare later this month."

Kilkenny scoring ace DJ Carey is in line to equal the all time record of 9 All Star Awards, held by Kerry's Pat Spillane.
