03/12/02 Brian's star-studded night one to remember!

The Vodafone Hurling All-Star Awards 2002 were announced on Friday night last and there was no shortage of glitz or glamour as the greatest players in the country (among them our own Brian McFall) flocked together to receive their awards at the luxurious City West Hotel in Dublin.

Brian, Ulster's only All-Star hurling hopeful, was unfortunately beaten to the award this year, though there was no shame in losing out to D.J. Carey, one of the modern legends of the game. It was certainly a great night for the club and one which highlighted the many efforts and sacrifices that had been made by Brian, his family and his various mentors over the years to get him to such dizzying heights of hurling excellence. Of course it was disappointing not to receive an award but, as Ger Loughnane said, it was a magnificent achievement to be selected out of the many thousands of players throughout the country and to be short-listed down to one of the best 45 players.

The Young Hurler of the Year award was won by Eoin Kelly of Tipperary, while Henry Shefflin received the overall honour.

Rumour has it that in preparation for the star-studded ceremony Brian was due to receive a makeover from one of Belfast's finest stylists Tina Collins however her husband Fergal Collins, St. John's hurling legend and style guru, got there first by giving him a designer broken nose during a club football friendly on Thursday night. When asked later about the incident Fergal was reported to have replied "It wasn't me..."
