15/12/02 St. John's Turkey Trot 2002

Amazing how quickly a year goes by as last Sunday yet another St. John's Turkey Trot came and went with the usual good craic, controversy and cognac thrown in for good measure.

The weather, whilst cold, was unusually mild for this time of year and it definitely gave the better golfers the edge on the true '18-holes-a-year' golfers who were turned out faithfully. Rumour has it that a number of participants were taking the tournament very seriously this year with a number of people spotted on the course for covert practice rounds in the run up to the event. Whilst others were noticed leaving a local driving range on a nightly basis over the last few weeks - all in the hope of obtaining the coveted "Gerry McKeown winner's blue blazer".

Unfortunately overall 2001 winner Seamus O'Prey, 2001 Section C winner Conor Gannon and 'Wooden Spoon' recipient were unable to return to Mount Ober Golf Club to defend their respective titles this year due to other commitments however, there were certainly worthy winners yet again this time round.

The prize-giving took place as per usual in the club after a few ports and glasses of mulled wine had been sipped, and pleasant conversation exchanged during the meal in the 19th hole after the tournament.
Man of the moment, winning the overall tournament and also topping Section B on only his second attempt, was none other than Niall 'Tiger' McCallin shooting a superb round of 63.
Section A was won by Jimmy 'The Shark' Darragh - continuing the family tradition started by his younger brother Martin Darragh in the mid-Nineties shooting an excellent 65.
And Section C was won by Sean 'brother of Gerry' Armstrong with a fine 69 - coming a long way since his famous 'wooden spoon/sticklebrick' accolade he earned in the Nineties.

The longest drive was awarded to Donal Kennedy who produced a jaw-dropping 301 yard drive (and on that form may find himself in nets for the hurling team next year).
The closest shot to the hole was awarded to John 'Hawkeye' Heenan whose subtle tee-shot spun expertly towards the pin with Faldoesque accuracy.
The legendary 'wooden spoon/sticklebrick/dancemat' award was presented to Aidan Kelly who must have honestly meant it when he said that he hadn't played golf since the last turkey trot...

Many thanks, as always, to Michael Gannon, Joe McGuinness and Jim Donnelly for organising the event and of course to the sponsors who donated the prizes, among them Gearoid Robinson, Eamon Mullan and Peter Heenan.

The results were as follows:
