Antrim manager honours St. John's
juveniles at presentation night
The young hurlers and footballers of St. John's celebrated their successes
last Saturday night at their annual youth presentation night. The new
Antrim Senior Hurling team manager, Dinny Cahill, was in attendance to
make the presentations.
The year 2001 was a very successful one for the youth of St. John's.
The under-16s had plenty of silverware on display last Saturday evening,
following their championship and league successes.
First to receive their awards on the evening were the young under-12s
who performed extremely well throughout the league and were congratulated
for their great effort and commitment to the club.
At under-13 level, Barry Mc Fall collected the Paul Crossey Memorial
Trophy, awarded for winning the South Antrim 7-a-side Indoor Hurling Tournament.
Barry also received the Player of the Tournament award from Antrim Manager
Dinny Cahill.
With the under-12 and under-13 presentations completed, it was the turn
of the under-14s to receive their awards. The under-14s had a very busy
year, they were runners up in the hurling and football league, South Antrim
football féile and beaten finalists in the Ulster hurling féile.
The highlight of the evening belonged to the club's under-16s who amassed
no less than 4 major titles throughout the year. In all they collected
the South Antrim hurling championship, South Antrim football championship,
the All-County hurling championship and the South Antrim under-16 hurling
league. The under-16 footballers also received their medals for winning
the Joe Mc Donnell - Kieran Doherty Memorial Football Competition organised
by St. Teresa's club. Special guest, Dinny Cahill made the presentations
to team captains Kevin Mc Glinchey (Football) and Niall Mc Callin (Hurling).
In his address, Tipperary man Dinny Cahill was full of praise for the
young Johnnies, their coaches and their parents. He congratulated them
on their successes and reminded them of the importance of training, practising
their skills and listening to their coaches. He said he was delighted
to visit Corrigan Park and thanked the club for the warm invitation.
St. John's, Club Chairman, Tony Mc Nulty congratulated the juveniles
and thanked the parents for their ongoing support, as did Chairman of
the Juvenile Committee, Frank Maskey, who also paid tribute to the players'
dedication, discipline and achievements throughout the year. He thanked
all the managers, mentors and helpers for their continuing hard work at
juvenile level.
With the formalities completed the young St. John's men and their parents
enjoyed a well deserved night's entertainment.
Well done to the underage players who received awards, and indeed to
all the juveniles for their great contribution to the club, and congratulations
to the juvenile committee for organising such a very successful evening.
