23/11/02 Vice-Chairman celebrates 51st birthday

Michael Gannon, Club Vice-Chairman and stalwart of St. John's GAC for over 40 years, celebrates his 51st birthday today and what better way to celebrate it than looking back at his illustrious career over the last 1/2 century.

Michael was always a strong athletic hurler in his younger years and this certainly helped him achieve one of his early successes as an international bodybuilder, winning the Mr Corrigan Park accolade three years in a row before deciding to leave this high profile world to return to hurling full time.

After a few years entertaining his team-mates in the changing rooms after matches with the Johnnies song and already renowned the club over as a huge singing talent he tried his hand as a member of a pop band performing famous renditions of "American Pie", unfortunately though he left it somewhat disillusioned before the band hit the big time...

It wasn't long before he made it onto the silver screen, providing us with some memorable moments in such movies as Butch Cassidy and the Commedagh Kid.

But is was as a politician which saw his true talent come to the fore, pictured here with the late great U.S. President John F. Kennedy at a St. John's fund raising event in the Balmoral Hotel.

Happy Birthday Michael!!
