03/01/03 Johnnies Juveniles go for gold at Belfast City Hall

St. John's Under 16 County Champions take centre stage during a special reception at Belfast City Hall

St. John's G.A.C. has recently been awarded the prestigious 'Sports Council's Junior Gold Club Award'.

Northern Ireland Sports Council representative Mr. Paul Donnelly presented the award during a special reception held at the Belfast City Hall. The award was handed over to the Chairman of St. John's Juvenile Committee, Mr. Frank Maskey.

Paul Donnelly congratulated the club on achieving Junior Gold Club status and remarked that a great deal of work went into securing the award, as St. John's has become only the first G.A.A. club in the Belfast area to receive the award.

Representatives of the club's senior committee, juvenile committee and the management and players of the St. John's under-16 hurling team that won the all-county title this year, joined Frank in the City Hall on the evening for the presentation.

The St. John's party was congratulated by the Lord Mayor, Mr. Alex Maskey, who hosted a reception and organised a tour of the City Hall for the St. John's contingent.

Though, for some of the juveniles, being in the corridors of power was just too much of a temptation, some thought that Barry McFall (left) for example let the power go to his head a little.

A presentation was also made to the Lord Mayor with Noel Rooney (right), who captained the St. John's under-16 side, handing over a cheque to Alex Maskey for the homeless people of Belfast.

The night capped off what has been a tremendous year for the Juveniles of St. John's GAC and which will certainly inspire the rest of the Club throughout the coming year.
