30/08/03 Minors through to Final of County
Hurling Championship
St. John's cruised to victory in the end against a well
organised Lamh Dhearg side despite probably never going above '2nd gear'
during the entire game. Giving a competent display St. John's did not
play the kind of hurling which they produced in the quarter and semi-finals
however they did enough to go through comfortably and never looked like
losing at any stage of the match.
Whilst they missed the influential midfield pairing of
John Mead and Peter Begley the minors showed their strength in depth as
Gerardo Hamilton started at midfield and Dermot Hartigan replaced Liam
Knocker at centre-3/4's in order to re-arrange the
team without the regular midfielders.
As with the previous matches everyone gave a good account
of themselves - Gerardo Hamilton and Niall McCallin were particularly
impressive in midfield, as was Dermot Hartigan at centre-3/4's.
Niall McCallin pointed a number of scores from frees as well as putting
the game safely away with his well taken goal mid-way through the second
half.
The defence were their usual 'safe selves' playing well
as a unit and soaking up anything which Lamh Dearg had to offer.
All-in-all it was an efficient display from the minors
which has seen them clinch a county final place for the first time in
a number of years for St. John's. They'll need to be fired up for the
final, but there will be no fear of that as preparation this year by the
management has been second-to-none.
All Club Supporters will no doubt be in attendance to
cheer the lads on come Final Day!!
