23/10/2003 Johnnies Under 14's have a good year!!
Under 14 Hurling 2003 Jan to Sept
31 Matches, 26 Coaching sessions.
Under 13 Hurling 2002 Aug to Dec 4 Matches, 20 Coaching sessions.
Our U-14 year began in August 2002 with the formation
of an U-13 panel. We commenced training on Wednesday nights and increased
this to 3 sessions a week throughout October and November. This included
indoor challenges and one challenge game away to Glenariffe with a result
of Glenariffe 8:04 to St. John's 1:06. We clearly needed a lot of work
and effort, so plans were put in place to increase our quantity and quality
of challenge games the following year.
With a short break over Christmas we began again in the
first week of January 2003 on Wednesday nights in the indoor hall. Training
continued with challenge games commencing in January and running continuously.
The highlight of our preparations were two trips to Castletown, Laois
from where we travelled into Kilkenny and Tipperary respectfully to play
challenge games against top clubs from these counties.
|
These weekends involved 3 matches over the Saturday and Sunday.
This put us in a great position to challenge for the Feile na Gael
and we subsequently reached the South Antrim Final losing to a very
strong GortnaMona outfit.
All in all the planned development of a competitive U-14 panel
for the 2003 season did materialize. The same group had not won
a game at U-12 level and we take pride in the competitive, sporting
spirit which our lads exhibited in 31 games this year all over the
country in Meath, Dublin, Derry, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Laois and
of course Antrim.

Funniest moment of the year
During our first trip to Castletown, Co.Laois on the Saturday evening
the team attended 7:00 pm Mass in the local Parish Church where the Parish
Priest praised the club on our efforts. After Mass on the way out the
front doors, Mentor Michael O'Neill stopped the Manager Shane Caldwell
and introduced him to the newly President Elect of the G.A.A. Sean Kelly.
|
Shane of course not believing him, shook
the poor man's hand, laughed loudly, shook his head said "Aye"
and walked off leaving a red faced Michael O'Neill and a bemused
president !
Shane explained his actions later "I
thought Mickey was just messing around, I genuinely thought he had
stopped some drunk in Castletown and asked him to pose as the President."
|

President Sean Kelly:
"Dia duit, Shane"
|
Petrol for bus to Co. Laois - £30.00
Contribution to parish fund at Mass - £5.00
Shane insulting the new President of the GAA - Priceless...
