17/03/04 St. Patrick's Day at Corrigan Park
St. Patrick's Day had a sense of the nostalgic about
it this year as matches were again organised in Corrigan
Park to celebrate our nation's Saint's day.
 |
It has been a while since this
annual tradition has been staged in Corrigan Park
and two matches were played courtesy of St. John's
and Lamh Dhearg's senior hurling and football teams,
both vying to lift the Heenan Cup for the first
time. |
|
The two matches provided plenty of entertainment and
a welcome curtain raiser to the All-Ireland Club Finals
in Croke Park. The St. John's teams managed in the end
to win the encounter (which was decided upon aggregate
scoring 4:14 to 1:12) and afterwards, that most cherished
of Irish delicacies, stew was provided for the players
and mentors in the Club canteen.
Later Vice-Chairman Michael Gannon and Senior Hurling
Evergreen Ronan Heenan presented the Heenan Cup to Stephen
Thompson, Captain of the Senior Hurling Team in the
Clubhouse, during halftime of the Dunloy match. Stephen
gave a rousing acceptance speech to the large crowd
of club members and revellers alike, hopefully the first
of many this year, and then passed the Cup around the
clubhouse for a victory swall.
Lamh Dhearg Chairman Sean Maguire then presented Michael
Gannon with a plaque commemorating the Club's 75th Anniversary
on behalf of Lamh Dhearg GAC.

After the Club Finals were over live music was provided
in the club (plus a guest spot by local guitar supremo
Hugho 'Duncan' Kennedy) and a large Lamh Dhearg contingent
of players and supporters stayed on to enjoy the craic
with the rest of the club.

We look forward to going up to Lamh Dhearg next year
when the Heenan Cup is staged in Hannaghstown for St.
Patrick's Day 2005.
