23/05/04 PSNI attempts to cut senior hurling and football panels

The St. John's senior hurling and football panels were almost reduced by 2 men this week after the swift intervention of the PSNI.

Brendan Moss was reportedly driving along Great Victoria Street when he happened across a sad looking Gareth Clarke. He soon discovered that young Clarke had locked the steering wheel of his car, but had forgotten his key.

Never one to leave a former team-mate stranded Mossy went to his trusty toolchest in his car and removed a number of tools which would help the two remove the steering lock.

PSNI stopping the two on Great Victoria Street

Meanwhile, two streets away, a PSNI mobile support unit was making its hourly tour of the city centre.

Turning onto Great Victoria Street they immediately relayed to PSNI command that two car thieves were at their work on a Peugeot 307 and they moved in to intercept.

The St. John's lads' explanation that they owned the car was not met with instant acceptance, as can be seen by these exclusive photographs taken by a Japanese tourist at the scene.

Gareth Clarke: "Honestly officer, It's my car!"

One PSNI officer stated: "Of course its your car, that's why you're trying to break into it". However, after 15 minutes, the whole mess was eventually sorted out, the handcuffs were removed and St. John's hurling and football panels thankfully remained intact. Phew!
(We understand that PSNI advised Gareth to invest in a combination lock for the steering wheel)
