04/08/04 St. John's through to Final of Division 2 League

Semi-Final Division 2 League Play off
St. John's 3-11
Glenravel 1-9

St. John's Division 2 hurlers deservedly won through to a League Final place against Armoy after seeing off the stern challenge of Glenravel on Wednesday night.

Packie Nolan scored a goal early on in the match to help springboard St. John's to a great start against tough opponents in this semi-final encounter at Corrigan Park, with Conor McCaffrey and Niall Grego accounting for the majority of Johnnies scores in the first half.

John Mead, once moved to right half forward, scored a fine individual point in the first half after battling through his marker, as well as a few Glenravel defenders, coming out on top and putting the ball over from an acute angle. St. John's also had a number of chances for goal but for the resistance of the Glenravel goalkeeper.

In the second half Glenravel came out fighting and looked for about 10 minutes as if they would overpower St. John's.

This was not to be however as the Johnnies weathered the storm and effectively demolished a deflated Glenravel side which showed plenty of determination for 45 minutes of the game but just did not have the staying power to contend with the men in blue and white.

Niall Grego scored a great goal in the second half after a mazey run through the majority of the Glenravel defence and a strong strike which the keeper could only bat away into the net. Jimmy Peoples then came off the bench to register his name on the scoresheet but it was the mercurial Conor McCaffrey who was most impressive for St. John's up front, rarely being beaten to the ball and had the better of both men who lined him during the course of the game. After a string of points he finished off his performance with a well deserved goal, which sealed with it the win.

Best for St. John's in defence was Liam Knocker at centre-half back and Joe Herald at corner back and Jamesie Connolly impressed with his dogged display at midfield.
