12/07/04 U-151/2 Hurling Challenge against St. Malachys, Portadown

St.Johns:……………………..5:08

St.Malachys, Portadown ……3:05

St.Malachys travelled to Belfast on Monday evening to play their St.Johns in an exciting competitive challenge game.

St.Johns took the game to St.Malachy’s in the first half with Jamesey McGibbon on form with 2 wonder goals one from 30 yards to the roof of the net, probably the best hurling goal seen in Corrigan this year.

With Anthony ‘Ga Ga’ Moore in commanding form at centre half back, the Johnnies managed to build up a wind assisted 3:06 to 1:02 lead at the interval. Indeed Moores 80m point from play during this period was a treat for our solitary supporter present in Mr Tommy Hall.

St. Malachy’s produced a strong come back in the second half when outstanding midfielder Shay McStravick goaled a 20m free early in the second period which was quickly followed by points from McStravick again and Gary McKee.

Aodhan Mulholland replied for the Johnnies with a converted 65 before St.Malachys captain Ciaran Hamill answered with an opportunists goal to leave the scores 3:07 to 3:04 in the Antrim mens favour.

Another point for St Malachy’s from Christopher McKillops narrowed the margin to just two points before the hamstrung Eoghan Caldwell picked off another point for St.Johns. This was quickly followed by a good goal from youngster Padraig McComb and a final goal from Michael Flannery after Caldwell’s quickly taken short free to him.

This was overall a good encounter between two committed teams with some excellent scores and defending from both sides although it was marred a bit near the end with a senseless scuffle.
