09/07/04 Minor Hurling league against Omerbane

Omerbane…..2:03
St.Johns…….2:13

(Omerbane = Glenravel/St.Brigids Cloughmills Amalgamation)

A holiday depleted (Horsey is in Canada!) St.Johns Minor team travelled to Glenravel on Friday night to play Omerbane in the league.

Despite missing personnel St.Johns maintained their 100% league record with another good win.

Jimmy Peoples opened the Johnnies scoring on 2 minutes with a well converted 25m free from the left. Omerbane however over the next 7 minutes missed 4 pointable frees before Colm McFall pointed a 65 for St.John’s second score.

warming up

Aaron Smiley then latched on to a long ball from midfield to round his marker and pointed from 20m for Omerbane. Eoghan Caldwell then broke on the left and hand passed to the centre for Jimmy Peoples to pop over his second point of the evening. Caldwell then managed to hit the upright a minute later after some good work out on the left again. Kevin Kennedy then turned provider for Jimmy Peoples with some good work and a deft hand pass to give Peoples another tap over from 25m.

charging down the ball

The ‘hand pass to Jimmy show’ then continued with the industrious Tony Fearon hand passing to Peoples who took his 4th score of the game.

Conor Donnelly began to raise his game at midfield for the glens men at this stage but his good work was countered when Tony Fearon sidelined the ball to Dermot Hartigan who worked his way across the front of Omerbanes goals past two defenders before blasting to the goal keepers left with a well placed shot from 20 yards.

This gave the Johnnies a solid lead of 1:05 to 0:01 with half time approaching.

Another good move on the left with Caldwell, Rooney and Fearon combining for Tony Fearon to point from 20m to give St.Johns a 1:06 to 0:01 half time lead.

Omerbanes inability to take their scores in this first half would ultimately cost them the game. They missed 8 pointable frees and had 5 wides from play during the first half compared with only 4 misses for the Johnnies in the same period.

halftime team talk.

Upon resumption , St.Johns now playing with the wind ,quickly took the game to Omerbane with quick points from Caldwell & Fearon in the first 5 minutes before Kevin Kennedy flicked deftly over the bar on 8 minutes to give St.Johns a 1:09 to 0:01 lead. Aaron Smiley then replied for Omerbane with a 20m free before Caldwell pointed again after a 30m run. Conor McStein who up to then had been having a quiet game by his standards then pulled on a breaking ball on the ground to give the South Antrim men a 2:10 to 0:02 commanding lead.

Omerbane hurlers

Colm McFall who had switched to full forward pointed another point after receiving an intelligent sideline cut from Jimmy Peoples. Liam Knocker then pointed a 65 for the Johnnies before Omerbane’s substitute Dean Kerr replied with a goal.

Colm McFall replied with a another point before Dean Kerr again showed great opportunism to latch onto the sliotar for his second goal of the game.

Colm McFall then replied again with a 25m free fro the right to finish proceedings.

Although a 10 point victory for the Johnnies , Omerbane were worth more than the scoreline showed. If they had brought a free taker with them and started the sharp Dean Kerr the result could have been a lot different.

Brian O’Neill, Conor Donnelly, Dean Kerr, Stephen Martin ,Paddy O’Neill & Aaron Smiley had good games for Omerbane.

St.Johns had reasonable performances from Captain Liam Knocker, Dermot Hartigan and Jimmy Peoples.
