Keady 2:06

St. Johns maintained their undefeated competitive Minor Hurling year with a comprehensive win over Keady in Armagh on Sunday morning.

Given their exploits the day before against Ballycastle it sounded out as another excellent performance. Paul Gribbin found himself in the unusual position of corner forward and notched up 2:01. His replacement in goal for the day was Ciaran McCurdy making his first outfield appearance since breaking his leg earlier in the year. ………. Well done to ‘The Jackpot.’!!!!!

25/09/04 Ulster Minor Hurling League Division 1

St.Johns 2:13
Ballycran 2:10

Played in bright conditions with a strong crosswind blowing from the stand side both teams served up on the whole an excellent competitive game and should be commended on their play.

Paul Keith opened opened the ‘Crans account on two minutes with a goal from a goal mouth melee before St.Johns, somewhat against the run off play replied with three points from Jimmy Peoples(2f) and one from Adrian Oliver before Colm McManus replied for the Ards men with a point from a free and then one from play to give them the lead. Further points were traded with St.Johns John Meade and corner forward Conor McStein registering points before McManus again replied with a free for the ‘Cran. Eugene Gilmore added a further point before some excellent work from Sean Ennis fed Conor Woods who pointed to give the Ards men the lead 1:05 to 0:06 after 20 minutes of play.

Simon McCrory then broke through on the right and released a great shot which was expertly stopped by ‘Cran keeper Declan Ennis. Colm McFall then pointed the resulting 45. Tony Fearon shortly afterwards sharply collected a breaking ball and crashed the sliotar to Ballycrans net to give the Johnnies a two point lead of 1:07 to 1:05. Peoples then followed up with a free before McManus replied with his own free to leave the half-time scores St.Johns 1:08(11) Ballycran 1:06(9).

Upon resumption Simon McCrory opened his account in the very 1st minute with an excellent point from 30m on the right wing. McManus again replied with another swerving free , this time from the right against a very strong cross wind before Peoples popped over yet another 20m free.( Blessed are the FreeTakers).

Eugene Gilmore then came out foraging and collected a long ball some 30m out and hoisted the sliotar high above the posts to leave the scores Ballycran 1:08 St Johns 1:10.

Then a period of severe Ballycran pressure ensued with Paul Keith hitting a rasping shot which came back off the Johnnies crossbar. This was followed by a disallowed goal for square ball and three missed frees from the normally reliable McManus to leave the Johnnies reeling but still in the lead.

Eoghan Caldwell then pointed sharply for St.Johns from 20m before Brendan Ennis replied for the ‘Cran. Jimmy Peoples further increased the Johnnies lead with another point .

Ballycran then took the game to the heart of St.Johns with Eugene Gilmore going close before Colm McManus broke through from the right on a 35m solo run to crash the sliotar to the Johnnies net to level the scores 2:09 to 1:12.

Brendan Ennis then picked off a superb point for the ‘Cran to give them the lead with only four minutes remaining before Conor McStein rallied his team mates when he collected a blocked down ball to point from 20m and level the scores yet again 2:10 to 1:13.

With two minutes remaining Liam Knocker won possession in his half back line, soloed up field and released a 40m pass for corner forward Caldwell to collect clean and then move into the path of John Meade who drove to the net to score the winning and final score of the game much to the relief of the St.Johns support.

An enjoyable game of hurling enjoyed by spectators and players alike. St.Johns could have lost this one but managed to grind out another good win again. Ballycran were good enough to win it and if they had registered a lot of their missed scores in the 2nd half the result undoubtedly would have been in their favour.

Colm McManus, Eugene Gilmore, Paul Keith, Brendan Ennis and Sean Ennis all had good games for Ballycran.

St.Johns main performers were Liam Boyle, John Meade and Jimmy Peoples They were supported in varying degrees by Colm McFall, Simon McCrory, Dermot Hartigan and Liam Knocker who shone in the last quarter.
