31/10/04 Double delight for Seniors during wonder weekend

With Halloween weekend upon them both St. John's senior hurling and football teams were hoping that they could scare up a few decent results and put their recent nightmarish forms to bed.

What a wonderful surprise then that both teams exorcised a few demons and produced two wins against Cushendall and St. Enda's respectively!

Senior Hurling - St. John's v Cushendall

Cushendall, fielding a team minus a few county stars for their away fixture to Corrigan Park, were reduced to 14 men early on in this encounter, which the home side duly capitalised on - the first half ending 0-9 to 0-2 (thanks to fine points from Simon McCrory among others and a strong defensive performance from the likes of Conor Gannon, Ronan Heenan, and Gareth Clarke).

The second half saw a Cushendall revival however, as they produced 3 goals in quick succession towards the end of the second half sending many Johnnies' nerves through the roof. However, a St. John's goal from Jimmy Peoples and then two superbly taken sideline cuts over the bar (courtesy of Antrim star Brian McFall) put their minds at ease, St. John's recording their first win in the new Division 1A league with a scoreline of 1-17 to 3-8. In the second half Ronan Heenan and Gareth Clarke were the backline's best players with Simon McCrory and Jimmy Peoples showing the older players how to do it.

Senior Football - St. John's v St. Enda's

At St. Enda's pitch on Sunday the senior footballers were without manager Gerry McCann however the assistant manager (his son Stephen McCann) was on hand to steer them through stormy waters to a vital win.

All was not well in the first half - the forward line looked all at sea with no-one causing the St. Enda's defence any trouble and midfield were non-existent - the St. Enda's duo dominating every kickout. The addition of Kevin Kennedy helped the situation just before halftime however the scoreline was a worrying 0-08 to 0-03

Matters didn't get any better in the second half until Stephen McCann (with no assistance from either of the Orange or O2 networks) pulled a masterstroke by restructuring the forward and midfield lines with a 3 man change - on came David Reynolds, Kevin McGlinchey and Neil Reynolds.

Shortly afterwards David Reynolds was played through on goal and made no mistake with his deadly finishing.

Further points from Liam Boyle and Geard McFall completed the turnaround and in the end St. Johns won by 4 points 0-09 to 1-10. Best for St. John's on the day were Ronan McHugh, Aaron Douglas, Kevin Kennedy and Liam Boyle.

The future's bright, the future's blue and white!
