07/11/04 Senior footballers defy
the odds to secure playoff place
|
Glenravel was the latest venue for the St. John's
Senior Football Away Win bus tour, recording as
they did their 2nd successive win in as many weeks.
With backs firmly against the wall and Division
2 status staring them blankly in the face St.
John's Seniors fought valiantly to carve out another
win against the odds and keep their dreams of
survival a reality.

Conditions were treacherous for player and supporter
alike as everyone in the park, except those who stayed
in the comfort of their cars to watch the match, received
a thorough soaking. The scoreline at the end of the
first half was much like the game against St. Endas,
St. John's trailing 0-5 to 0-2 after a poor forward
display, however they were playing uphill and into a
stiff breeze.
The second half was an entirely different story as
St. John's fought tooth and nail to get back into the
game. The second half began with a Glenravel point,
but thankfully this was to be the last score they were
to register in the match as the St. John's defence kept
them out for the rest of the game. Aaron Douglas, Ronan
McHugh, Gareth Clarke and Gearoid Adams were simply
superb in the second half with the other backs Anto
Press and Enda McKenna working tirelessly to move the
ball up the field.
Fresh from reading an excerpt from the Book of Maccabees
at the Club mass a few hours earlier Captain Enda McKenna
turned from prophet to sinner as he received his marching
orders for a second bookable offence in the last 15
minutes. This was not enough to deter his team however,
as they held out for the win.
Substitutes John Mead, Collie McKnight and Adrian Oliver
added greater threat to the forward line and this, together
with the team's overall increased fight and determination,
saw St. John's end the game with a win. Kevin McGlinchey
claimed a number of high balls in the second period,
Locky McCurdy and Brian McFall gathered some all-important
breaking balls and, with Liam Boyle taking his frees
with perfect accuracy and Gerard McFall and Adrian Oliver
both pointing St. John's finished the match 0-6 to 0-7
winners.
It was enough to send them into the playoffs and relegate
St. Enda's to Division 2 status for the coming year.
With the momentum St. John's have gathered over the
last few matches the Club will be hoping that they will
confirm their rightful place in Division 1.
