13/02/05 U-16 Hurlers brave the elements on top of the Belfast Hills

The very hardy U-16 Hurlers took off on a sponsored walk on Sunday morning in freezing temperatures to raise funds for their forthcoming trip to Cashel where they will play Urlingford Emeralds of Kilkenny and Moycarkey Borris of Tipperary.

Mentor Michael O’Neill (The Ginger Mixer at the far right of the photo), upon hearing that the Moycarkey Borris manager had mentioned that they were in training for the game, remarked that “ I bet they’re not on top of a bloody mountain, freezing to death.”

Dunloy …3:09 St. Johns 1:05

St Johns minors travelled to Dunloy at the weekend for their third competitive outing only to go down heavily to a strong robust Dunloy outfit.

St Johns flattered to deceive in the first 15 minutes where they went into a 1:01 to 0:01 lead before Dunloy took a strangle hold on the game.

Ryan Thibedeau, Brian Holmes and Simon McCrory all had good games for the Johnnies. Kevin McGuinness tried despite being in severe pain with a dead leg and the flu ridden Conal Maskey should have been in bed.

With victories over St. Malachys and Rossa and defeat away to Dunloy , St.Johns minor footballers made it three out of four wins in the winter minor football league.

Played in freezing conditions with a strong biting wind blowing from end to end a strong first half performance saw the Johnnies go in 1:01 to 0:01 in front at the interval. The second half saw a continuation of this with the wind assisting to give the minors a comfortable win. A strong defensive performance all round with Paddy Boyle, Sean Rooney, Kevin Kennedy, Paul Gribbin and Kevin McGuinness playing well.
