St Johns 0-12 Dunloy 1-15
St.John's opened their Ulster League account with a defeat to Ulster champions Dunloy on Saturday at a breezy Corrigan Park. Although being beated by 5pts in the end it was very encouraging performance for the first game of the season and taking into account missing several first team regulars through involvement with county teams and through injury it was all the more encouraging.
The first half proved to be a nip and tuck affair with both sides trading points at regular intervals. Silly frees and players not tracking their men lead to Dunloy building up a 0-6 to 0-3 lead. To their credit St.John's battled back and several frees from Gerard Cunningham and Jude Savage added to two excellent long range points from Conor McSteen and some impressive tight angled scores from Kevin Mullan and Liam Boyle chipped away at the Dunloy lead and reversed it to leave St.John's 0.11 to 0.10 infront at the half.
The second half had St.John's playing into a strong breeze and some hard work from the players kept them well in touch with Dunloy and after 50mins there was the bare minimum between the teams. A Conor Cunning goal 5mins from time effectively killed of the St.John's challenge. Match fitness and Dunloy's extra training due to their All-Ireland campaign was obviously a massive factor leading to their win. However the performance, work rate and attitude from the young team St.John's team was impressive for long spells. Strongest performers where Danny Best making his senior debut at midfield, Sean Lawell and Conor McSteen having steady games and the returning Ciaran Cunningham who made several point blank saves.
