Referee Recruitment

This is an important if somewhat overlooked aspect of our games. As a matter of urgency we need to recruit some new blood for the season ahead. I’m not looking for any member to commit to a career at refereeing, although if that were to happen, all the better. Instead, I’m looking for a number of members to commit to attending some training as a referee and thereafter to officiate at a small number of games.

There is a need for referees of both football and hurling. At the juvenile end, we are expected to provide the referee for the home fixtures. This is an ideal place for anyone to start; refereeing in familiar surroundings in what should be games without too much stress.

At South Antrim, we need referees for games at U-16, Minor and Senior level. As most of the fixtures are played mid-week in the Belfast area, the time commitment and travelling involved is at a realistic level.

I know that a few members already help out with refereeing, and I will be in touch with them to gauge their level of commitment for this season. If there is a positive response it will probably be possible to run a course at Corrigan within the next few weeks. Any members willing to give it a try can contact me on the mobile 07793640027 or by using the e-mail jim_donnelly_ccc@hotmail.com
